As a prominent center for the music industry, particularly in country music, Nashville is affectionately referred to as “Music City.”

- Alfred Howell Bartles
Alfred was a composer and musician who lived in the United States. A cellist and pianist, he is most known for his piece “Music for Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble,” which has been regarded as a “pioneering work in the crossover between jazz and classical music.”
He also composed for orchestra and jazz ensemble. Bartles grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and received his formal piano training under Lennie Tristano.
With the idea of studying music, he enrolled at Vanderbilt University in 1949. However, he dropped out shortly after the commencement of the Korean War to work as an arranger and pianist for the United States Army.
He earned a master’s degree in composition from Ohio University, where he studied under the tutelage of Karl Ahrendt, and then began learning the cello in earnest.
- Clifton David Briley
David is an American politician who was born in the city of Nashville, Tennessee, in January 1964. He was the seventh mayor of the Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County area, and he was a Democrat.
He was first elected to the position of vice mayor in 2015, and he was sworn in as interim mayor on March 6, 2018, following Megan Barry’s resignation. In the end, Briley won the May 24 special election to fill the remaining two years of Barry’s term with 55 percent of the vote over almost a dozen competitors, avoiding the need for a runoff and establishing himself as Nashville’s official mayor.

John Cooper was elected mayor of Nashville in the 2019 election, defeating incumbent Bill Briley. Briley was the first native-born resident of both Nashville and Tennessee to hold the position of mayor since Bill Boner in 1991.
- Madison Smartt Bell
Bell is an American novelist who was born in August 1957 in Nashville, Tennessee. She is the author of several novels. Even though he has a long history as a writer and has produced a number of novels, he is most known for his trilogy of novels on Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution, which was published between 1995 and 2004.
Madison Smartt Bell was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, and is a graduate of Montgomery Bell Academy. The author is a graduate of both Princeton University, where he was awarded the Ward Mathis Prize in fiction as well as the Francis Leymoyne Page award, and Hollins University, where he was awarded the Andrew James Purdy literature award.
